If you live in the deep South in the U.S., high humidity combined with high temperatures often defy description. It can be downright brutal. The net negative can be worse on your instrument than your hair. Musical instruments are constructed of many components that can be affected by temperature and humidity. Wood needs to breathe and doesn’t like to be too dry or too damp. The finishes applied to instruments, no matter if lacquer or poly, need to breathe, as it out-gases for years after it’s applied. Metal can pit and corrode if it’s subjected to too much humidity. All in all, proper temperature and humidity control for an instrument can cause short and long-term damage and reek havoc on your finish, your ability to tune, and the value of the instrument. Suffice it to say, temperature and humidity are important to monitor to avoid all of these pitfalls. Unfortunately, it can be hard to remember to keep a check on these things if you have your guitar in a closet or your basement rehearsal space. Govee has introduced the Govee Smart Hygromoeter/Thermometer. This little device is your very own humidity and temperature concierge. It’s a lightweight device that is very “apple-esque” in presentation—all white body with a round led screen. It pairs via Bluetooth™ with your smart phone. From the app, you can control the parameters and alerts you want to set. The display is simple and straightforward and you don’t need a meteorological degree to decipher the information. For my test, I simply placed the Govee in the inner pocket of my gig bag for my guitar, paired it up, and began monitoring. The recommended humidity for an acoustic guitar is 45-55 percent, but 40-60 percent is also acceptable. I was happy to see my Govee read 49.7% in my Epiphone acoustic. This is the perfect humidity for this guitar. The Govee comes with a 3M adhesive backed wall mount (which I didn’t use in my application). It also comes with the batteries included (AAA times 3). The device is about 2.5 inches long by .75 inches tall so compact enough for almost any instrument case. Additionally, if you have an instrument closet, you could simply mount this device on the wall of that storage area so you can monitor all your instruments. The detecting range is up to 230 feet in ideal condition (no obstructions). There is no cloud-based monitoring…yet. The Govee H5051 WiFi Thermo-Hygrometer serves to let you know when an area is too hot, cold, or damp so that you can do something about it before plants, people, and things die or mold grows everywhere. Should you question whether this is in fact a Hydrometer, check out Hydrometer vs Hygrometer and get your learn on. While Bluetooth versions of these things have been around for years, that really doesn’t help all that much if, say you’re not within Bluetooth range when your office AC unit malfunctions and superheats your office and boils your plants. For basements it’s a good way to test the air to see if there’s too much moisture (busted water lines,) and to let you know when your AirBnB is being treated very strangely. Alternately maybe you want to know that baby’s room is the correct temperature/humid enough, although you probably could get away using the Bluetooth version here. The Govee H5051 runs off of three included AAA batteries and can be placed anywhere you need it within WiFi range. Alarms can be set up for temperature and humidity ranges to alert you when you’ve exceeded a threshold, however you’ll need to make sure the Govee app hasn’t been killed by any power saving app. There currently appears to be no Assistant integrations for Google, Amazon, etc. I have an email stating that is being worked on, however you go with the product as it stands and not what people hope to accomplish. Govee WiFi Temperature and Humidity MonitorGovee WiFi Temperature and Humidity Monitor My other found annoyance with the Govee H5051 is it exists in that IoT segment that has to connect to 2.4gHz and has a setup app (Govee Home,) that cannot differentiate between a 2.4 and 5gHz SSID named the same thing. As such I had to follow my own tutorial over here to make my phone join the 2.4gHz access point and then set the thermo-hygrometer up. This is really inexcusable these days. These Smart Home apps should really be able to join a network at 2.4gHz by SSID, not require the phone being connected to a certain band to set it up. The device has an always on display do you can eyeball the temp, and it pings back every 10 or 30 minutes depending on how you’ve got it set up to save battery. With an MSRP of $75.99 and a deal that puts it in the $64.59 range (deal expired within 9 hours of writing,) I’d really like to see this thing be more robust on the software side. My guess is the Govee Home app will eventually be Google Assistant integrated (based on email I just got yes.) It reminds me of Smart Life, which most other IoT things I’ve been given use, so here’s hoping. Hi everyone! I was able to get my hands on a new bluetooth meat thermometer out in the market and give it a test. It’s called the Govee Bluetooth Meat Thermometer The Govee comes with 6 probes and the main controller, which the 6 probes plug into. There is also an app in the iPhone and Android app stores, which you can download and use to make setting changes and monitor with. Overall, I would say this is a good thermometer for the average user at home. For under $50, you really can’t go wrong if you are looking for something like this to keep around. Competitors like Fireboard, ThermoWorks and iGrill cost much more. You do get some more bells and whistles, but again, for under $50, you really can’t go wrong with this. This puts the thermo at under $35 and a steal for what you are getting at that price. Some highlights and images below for you to use, to help make your decision. Here’s what I liked about it: 6 probes, which is quite a bit for one thermometer I loved that the probes are color coded and you can name them in the app The price, at under $50, it was a great price The packaging is really nice and sturdy enough to re-use for storage of the thermo when not using Extremely accurate. I cooked a brisket with this thermometer and measured it against my ThermaPen, which I trust with everything. The temps were within 2 degrees of each other the entire way I liked the fact that you could monitor from your phone The app was easy to download and intuitive. Nothing to it and it worked initially What I didn’t like I struggled with the Bluetooth staying connected when I was more than 10 feet away, or when I was anywhere not in sight range. I had my cooker outside and whenever I went inside, I couldn’t get the app to connect. The probes are massive! I like that for brisket or pork, or even a turkey, but for a steak or something smaller, they are far too big, so it limits the use for me. While surfing through the internet, looking for a smart temperature sensor, you must have come across the Govee and SensorPush. And if you’ve already decided between the two, then congratulations! You’re one step away from the perfect ambiance in your room! But if not, then don’t worry. I’m here to make you understand the difference. Govee and SensorPush are both smart temperature sensors. So you can get records, graphs, push notifications, and even safe exporting. Chances are, you can’t decide between the two. While both have their own unique features, only one can be the true winner. Govee vs. SensorPush: Which One is Better? While reviewing the two, I was at a standstill. Both of the smart temperature sensors had some amazing features to offer. For example, both of them had spectacular accuracy. And both had about the same functionality. However, when it came down to pick the one, I found the Govee Smart Sensor is slightly better than the SensorPush. But take note: I used the word “slightly”. In reality, the main differences were almost negligible. There was only a 0.14 F error difference between the Govee and the SensorPush. And the apps and connectivity were about the same. Of the two products, both are completely worth the money. Of course, durability obviously poses an issue. Both the Govee and the SensorPush smart temperature sensors will lose battery life faster in freezers. And the sensor can get blocked by locked doors. Measurement Accuracy · Govee Smart Sensor The Govee Smart Temperature Sensor has great accuracy right down to two decimal points. This device can measure temperature up to 140 F (60 C). Temperature recordings can vary by an error of 0.36 F (0.2 C). Furthermore, the humidity range is between 0% and 99%. This sensor has an error capacity of 3%. As compared to others, the temperature error is very low. Most have temperature errors as high as 1 F (0.6 C). The humidity error, although seemingly high, is actually pretty common among humidity sensors. Comparatively, both the sensors are highly accurate and get the measurements correct. · SensorPush Wireless Sensor As for the SensorPush Smart Temperature Sensor, the temperature range is practically the same. It can measure from -40 F (-40 C) to up to 140 F (60 F). However, the temperature error here is a bit complicated. If you’re measuring anywhere between 0 C to 60 C, then the error is 0.5 F (0.3 C). Temperature below 0 C will have an error of 1.3 F (0.7 C) For humidity, the range is between 0 and 100%. If measuring humidity between 20% and 80%, the error is a typical 3%. When measuring the full range, this error can increase up to 7.5%. Winner – Govee For accuracy, the Govee smart temperature sensor is a definite winner. Its temperature error is only 0.36 F, as compared to the 0.5 F of the SensorPush. Also, with the SensorPush, at extremer values, the error increases. This is probably the case with the Govee too, although it’s never mentioned. Mobile App · Govee Smart Sensor The Govee Sensor’s mobile app features Wifi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. With the app, you can monitor an infinite number of sensors. Also, you can connect the sensors to an unlimited number of phones and devices. This smart temperature sensor will give you real-time updates about the temperature and humidity every minute. You can opt to send regular notification alerts to your phone. This can be done in case your temperature goes beyond your preset limit. You can also mail the graphs and readings to your phone. The sensor can connect to the app from as far as 328 feet. Stay within this range to get info on temperature and humidity conditions. · SensorPush Wireless Sensor The SensorPush smart temperature sensor has about the same app features as the Govee. It features connectivity through Wifi and Bluetooth 4.0 The connectivity distance is about 325 feet, not too far from Govee’s. Moreover, you can opt to send yourself push notifications to your phone. The app also tells you whether the features have fallen or risen since the previous minute. This will give you a good idea of how well your humidifiers and refrigerators are working. You can also view a line graph of the readings from the past hour, day, week, month, or year. Winner – SensorPush For this round, it was hard to choose between the two smart temperature sensors. Both SensorPush and Govee’s apps record and display data efficiently. You get the benefit of push notifications and graphical readings. However, the one difference is that SensorPush’s app also tells you whether the features are falling or rising. Battery Life · Govee Smart Sensor Govee’s smart temperature sensor has a battery life of 365 days. The heavy-duty CR123A ambiance battery is powerful enough to last for a year. Furthermore, the device uses up a minimal amount of battery life. So it will last for quite a while. Normally, appliances don’t require frequent battery changes. A battery that can last for a year means your device won’t go cold. Battery life isn’t all that matters though. The strength and range of the sensor will inevitably decrease with time. But this will usually happen after your first year with the Govee. · SensorPush Wireless Sensor The SensorPush smart temperature sensor also has a battery life of 365 days. Which means it will last just as long as your average Govee Sensor. The SensorPush uses a CR2477 lithium-ion battery. The battery cannot be recharged but can be replaced by the user. It is recommended to get the same type of battery every year. Batteries can lose a life when put in colder conditions. While the SensorPush has been designed to resist low temperatures, the battery can still get affected. Expect the battery to lose some health when you use it in the freezer. Winner – Tie It’s a tie for now. Both products use similar batteries that last for up to a year. And both of them deteriorate when used in the freezer. There wasn’t much of a difference in battery life. But there wasn’t anything that specifically stood out either. 1 year is normal for temperature sensors. Storage Capability · Govee Smart Sensor When you’re recording multiple readings, you might want to view them later. With the Govee, you can view up to 20 days of readings. But this is just the amount that is stored on the device itself. The device will erase the reading for the 20th day and replace it with the new one. In the smart temperature sensor app, however, you can view the data for years. This is mainly through cloud storage. You can view readings such as temperature, humidity, their averages, and the maxima and minima. This will be a good use if you want to check your conditions over time. · SensorPush Wireless Sensor The SensorPush smart temperature sensor also allows you to view records from years back. You can view the recordings from the very day you buy the Sensor. Even if you download the app a few days after you buy the sensor, you can still view the recordings. Just be sure that you download the app and activate cloud storage before you reach 20 days. You can also opt to get all the readings exported in CSV format. This can be a great choice if you want to showcase the findings in a presentation. One drawback though is that you can’t view the records on their website. You can only view them of the app, which requires a lot of navigating through screens. Winner – Govee While the storage capacity and time period are the same, convenience is not. You cannot go to the SensorPush website and view readings of different sensors in different tabs. This would speed up the process more. But unfortunately, the feature is not included with the SensorPush smart temperature sensor. So it loses this round due to this inconvenience. Pros and Cons: Govee Smart Sensor Pros: Higher accuracy with an error of less than 1 F and 3 RH. Can work in multiple conditions; hot, cold, or humid. Lasts you for a year. Great for long-term monitoring. Perfect for use in wine freezers, cigar humidors, and nail salons. Smart temperature sensor. Readings are consistent between all units. The app can connect to multiple devices at the same time. Cons: Battery life runs out faster when in the freezer or cold conditions. Not waterproof. Humidity can seep inside and ruin the circuiting. SensorPush Wireless Sensor Pros: You can connect it through Bluetooth to your smartphone or tablet. It can export through CSV to presentations and Excel files. Accurate readings right down to the second decimal. You can connect your app to an unlimited number of sensors. Records are stored in the cloud forever. Readings are highly consistent and do not differ across devices. Cons: You cannot calibrate it manually. This can increase the chances of an error. The humidity sensor can be pretty inaccurate in extreme conditions. It cannot be used in the freezer without damage to the battery life. Final Thoughts So that settles it. The Govee Smart Temperature Sensor is better than the SensorPush. However, as I stated, both have some very similar features. And the differences were mostly negligible. I had to choose one over the other based on these negligible differences. But if you ask me, practically, both can work perfectly well. Of course, you will run into durability issues. This is usually something you can’t avoid, as not all products are manufactured the same. This will also depend on where you’re using them and how you’re maintaining them. But all in all, both Govee and SensorPush have certainly outdone themselves. I recommend buying one of them right now.
